Can't choose any other project type than 'desktop'

Hi,

Taking my first steps with appcelerator but not got far so far!

I've installed it, registered and tried to follow instructions in the "Getting Started" guide here: http://developer.appcelerator.com/doc/mobile/get_started

I've set the "Android SDK" location in the intial profile screen. When I click 'new project' it shows 'project type' as 'Desktop' and doesn't give me any way to change it.

What am I doing wrong?

thanks,

  • Do you have Apple SDKs installed?

You need them for mobile development.

  • I didn't realise that. It's not very clear - there's a box to explicitly tell it where to find the Android SDK, I imagined that should give me the ability to start a 'mobile' project. What if I didn't want to build my app for iPhone? It sounds like I'm forced to, yes?

Anyway, I've registered as an Apple developer and gone to the SDK downloads page (http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action#downloads). That's confusing too. I can d/l a 'leopard' or 'snow leopard' version. Sorry if I'm being thick, but how do I get a windows version?

  • You can't dev for iPhone on Windows as there is no sdk available. Desktop and Android only…

As for confusing….Entering the world of iPhone development just gets more and more confusing as you go along. There are gobs of amusing but helpful articles written on the subject. I think it's Apple's version of Darwinism.

  • OK thanks Brendan. You said "just desktop and android" - that's all I want at the moment, so how do I get appcelerator to let me choose a 'mobile' project type if I don't have the Apple SDK installed?

  • OK I'm an idiot. I didn't realise 'project' was a 'drop down'. There's no visual cue to say it's a select box, didn't expect it to be. Been webdevving too long maybe…

  • My project type wasn't a dropdown until after I restarted the Titanium app.
    Hope this helps.
