A Dropbox-like app possible?

Hi,

is it somehow possible to display standard document formats besides pictures with Titanium? Like the Dropbox app does? I could not find anything in the API, so I fear the worst.

My intention is to pimp our iPhone app with some file browsing functionality. For example to preview a downloaded PDF file or a Numbers file. Apple Mail is able to do that and maybe it uses the same iPhone SDK core stuff like Titanium does?

I mean, camera, picture and video stuff is already awesome with Titanium, but what about other file formats?

  • You just open the document(s) in webview. I think that's how Dropbox does it but I could be wrong.

    • and then it uses iPhone Safari’s PDF/Numbers/Excel/Word "rendering engine"? That sounds like a brilliant idea! I give it a try. Never used a webview.

  • in theory you should indeed be able to open every file that is supported within in a webview on iPhone, however i found that if you plan to port it to android some file-types might not be available there (SVG for an example)

  • Dropbox has an API - https://www.dropbox.com/developers - I'm currently banging my head against the wall trying to figure out oAuth ;)

If this is what you're needing I'd love to share info on it!
